Published on October 11, 2026 · 6 min read

A good CV is not always enough to land an interview.
Your cover letter must extend it, without repeating it.
Discover how to connect these two documents to present a clear, consistent and convincing application.

Cover letter and CV: two documents, two roles

Sara has tailored her CV to a sales assistant job offer.
For her cover letter, she uses a template found online and copies the lines of her CV into it.
The recruiter reads both documents, but feels they are reading the same thing twice, without understanding what motivates Sara.
Her application is not selected.

The CV shows, the letter explains

Your CV presents what you have done: your experience, your qualifications and your skills.
Your cover letter explains why you are applying: why this job, why this company and what you can bring to it.
The two documents therefore do not say the same thing, but they must point in the same direction.
When they are well connected, they form a single application that is clear and consistent.

A document that matters in your application

A guide from UPEC, a French university working in partnership with Apec, makes a simple point: the letter is not attached to the CV, the CV is attached to the letter.
According to the same guide, the letter should illustrate your CV and can help the recruiter choose between two candidates.
It therefore deserves as much care as your CV.

Mistakes that break the link between the two documents

Several mistakes make an application lose all its consistency:

How do you connect your cover letter to your CV?

Start from the same job offer

Your CV and your letter must answer the same offer.
Before writing, reread the ad and note the three or four most important expectations of the recruiter.
Your CV shows that you meet these expectations, and your letter explains how you will meet them in the job.

Reuse the same keywords

In your letter, use the keywords from the job offer that you have already placed in your CV.
If your CV mentions "customer relationship management", use the same expression in your letter.
The recruiter then finds the same reference points in both documents and immediately sees that your application answers their offer.

Tell the same story

Jobs, dates, companies and qualifications must be identical in your CV and in your letter.
This consistency is not just a matter of form.
In France, Article L1221-6 of the French Labour Code states that candidates must answer the recruiter's job-related questions in good faith.
Inaccurate information can therefore be held against you, and a contradiction between your documents always weakens your application.

Match the layout

A careful application can also be recognised by its form.
Choose the same font, the same colours and the same style for both documents.
On cv-lettre.com, the Éclat, Horizon and Aurore letter templates match the CV templates: simply choose the same template and the same colour for a consistent application.

How do you expand in your letter on what you wrote in your CV?

Choose two or three strong points

Your letter should not repeat your whole CV.
Select two or three items that directly meet the expectations of the job offer: an experience, a project or a skill.
Apec also recommends personalising your application with examples backed by figures and personal references.
These are the items you will expand on.

Use the situation, action, result method

For each item you choose, tell a short story in three steps:

  1. The situation: where were you and what was needed?
  2. The action: what exactly did you do?
  3. The result: what difference did it make?

A concrete example

Here is how Sara turns a line from her CV into a passage of her letter:

On her CV, Sara wrote: "Tracked 40 orders a week in Excel".
In her letter, she expands: "In my previous job, I tracked around forty orders a week. I created a follow-up spreadsheet that helped reduce delivery delays. This is the rigour I would like to bring to your team."

Build your letter in four paragraphs

A simple structure helps you connect the letter to the CV naturally:

  1. The opening: say in one or two sentences which job you are applying for and why it interests you.
  2. Your background and strengths: expand on one or two experiences from your CV related to the job, without copying it.
  3. Your interest in the company: show that you know what it does and what attracts you to it.
  4. The conclusion: suggest an interview and thank the reader simply.

Conclusion

Your CV and your cover letter are not two separate documents, but the two halves of a single application.
The CV shows what you have done, and the letter explains why it matters for the job you want.
To connect them, start from the same job offer, reuse the same keywords, keep the same information and expand on two or three strong points from your CV.
